A rafting trip down the Smith River in Montana is considered to be a fishing trip, rather than a whitewater trip. But the Smith offers outstanding scenery and because public access along the run is almost non-existent, the fishing can be out of this world. So floating the Smith with a fly rod is at the top of the list of things to do for many river runners. The river has a short float season and permits are both required and difficult to obtain.
